This is a great site, it seems like it's good for programmers but there's not much else that people can use it for except maybe tech support people. It's free so I'm going to use it. Are there pay sites like this? I've seen one other but I can't think of the name of it. does anyone know?

encrypt your web traffic with ssh and squid

This is a great way to encrypt your web traffic from one location to your server. Doesn't everyone have their own OpenBSD server?

Update: I found out any eaiser way to do a encrypted http tunnel through an untrusted network
with just SSH. Please see May 2006 blog entry
on it. It can also be done with Putty on windows. I'll leave the info below anyway.

I want to setup SSH to tunnel my web traffic through Squid. Squid would be the proxy server for
my web traffic when I'm connected to a network I don't trust. For example if I'm using a public WiFi
connection. SSH would tunnel http requests from the remote machine through my gateway at home.
All http traffic is usually sent in the clear so anyone can see what sites your visiting because your on
their network connection. So lets encrypt the traffic. I plan on doing this by tunneling my traffic
thru SSH and running the Squid http proxy on localhost. I know all the traffic going from the gateway
squid proxy to the internet is not encrypted but I trust the gateway. Any http request going out of there
anyway would be unencrypted. It's just the way the protocol was designed.

Squid will be setup on my gateway machine at home. Squid will be listening on 127.0.0.1 (localhost) so
no one can connect to it from the internal lan or the internet. The gateway machine only has SSHD running on it
and is only available to certian IP ranges from the internet. The http requests will be tunneled from the client
machine through SSH and sent to squid on the gateway machine. Squid will process the request and sent it back
the browser on the client machine which has been setup to use proxy settings. Do the following steps below.

1. Install the simple version of squid without any packages with the words like "transparent" or "SNMP"
on the OpenBSD gateway machine with: pkg_add -vf http://blah.com/OpenBSD/squid-xxx-STABLExx.tgz

2. Edit /etc/squid/squid.conf and see below for the only lines I changed from the default config file.
The rest of the settings were left to default. Just check yours match the ones below at a minimum. Change your file
according to your tastes and setup then save it.

3. Initialize the cache with the command "squid -z".

4. Start squid with the command "/usr/local/sbin/squid".

5. To test it go to a machine on the inside lan or a machine that can access the gateway from outside
the lan. SSh to the gateway machine with the command "ssh -L 8080:localhost:8080 192.168.0.1". This command creates
a port that listens on port 8080 on the local machine (locahost). We will be pointing our browsers to this port
to have our traffic tunneled to the gateway machine. When that encrypted traffic gets to the other side it is
directed to localhost port 8080 on the gateway where Squid has been setup to listen for requests.

6. After that ssh connection is connected open your web browser. Go to the proxy settings of the
browser (in firefox Edit->Preferences->General->Connection->Connection Settings->Manual Proxy Configuration").
Under the http proxy section put in the proxy host name of "locahost" and port "8080". Click ok and your done.

7. Surf to ipchicken.com and your IP address that shows up should
be the IP address of the gateway. If your on the internal lan then this is no big deal but if you set the proxy
settings correctly you should be able to hit any webpage and if it comes up your working through the proxy.

8. If it worked then make Squid start on boot by putting this in your /etc/rc.local file:

If you develop databases, then you're going to need to know what this guy's rules are about.

Rule 1: The Information	All information in a relational database is represented explicitly at the logical level and in exactly one way - by values in tables.
Rule 2: Guaranteed Access	Each and every datum (atomic value) in a relational database is guaranteed to be logically accessible by resorting to a combination of table name, primary key value, and column name.
Rule 3: Systematic Treatment of Null Values	Null values (distinct from the empty character string of blank characters and distinct from any zero or other numbers) are supported in fully relational DBMS for representing missing information and inapplicable information in a systematic way.
Rule 4: Dynamic Online Catalog Based on the Relational Model	The database description is represented at the logical level in the same way as ordinary data, so that authorized users can apply the same relational language to its interrogation as they apply to the regular data.
Rule 5: Comprehensive Data Sublanguage	A relational system may support several languages and various modes of terminal use (for example, the fill-in-the-blanks mode). However, there must be at least one language whose statements are expressible, per some well-defined syntax, as character strings, d that is comprehensive in supporting all of the following items: Data Definition View Definition Data manipulation (interactive and by program) Integrity Constraints Authorization Transaction boundaries (begin, commit, and rollback).
Rule 6: View Updating	All views that are theoretically updateable are also updateable by the system.
Rule 7: High-Level Insert, Update, and Delete	The capability of handling a base relation or a derived relation as a single operand applies not only to the retrieval of data but also to the insertion, update, and deletion of data.
Rule 8: Physical Data Independence	Application programs and terminal activities remain logically unimpaired whenever any changes are made in either storage representations or access methods.
Rule 9: Logical Data Independence	Application programs and terminal activities remain logically unimpaired when information-preserving changes of any kind that theoretically permit unimpairment are made to the base tables.
Rule 10: Integrity Independence	Integrity constraints specific to a particular relational database must be definable in the relational data sublanguage and storable in the catalog, not in the application programs.
Rule 11: Distribution Independence	A relational DBMS has distribution dependence.
Rule 12: Nonsubversion	If a relational system has a low-level (single record at a time) language, that low level cannot be used to subvert or bypass the integrity rules and constraints expressed in the higher-level relational language (multiple records at a time).

Bami Goreng - A recipe

This is a tasty and easy-to-make Indonesian dish. Delicious with an ice-cold beer, and to be eaten with fork and spoon a la Indonesian.

What you need (for four people) :

300 gr. egg noodles
1 garlic clove
1 tablespoon crushed chillies
1 tablespoon crushed coriander
3.5 cm piece root ginger
½ lt vegetable broth
olive oil
soy sauce
2 spring onions
1 small red pepper
200 gr. skinned chicken breast
120 gr. peeled prawns
2 eggs

How you do it:

First of all prepare a quick and flat omelette. Once it’s done it’s done, and you don’t need to multitask unnecessarily!

Blend garlic, ginger, spring onions, chillies and coriander to a paste. Stir-fry in a little oil in a hot wok. Add the chopped pepper, the peeled prawns and the chicken, after you have diced and poached it for 5-7 minutes. Also add two scarce ladles of the water in which you poached the chicken and let simmer vivaciously until it thickens, having care to mix well quite frequently.

Heat some water and as soon as it starts boiling switch off the heat and throw in the noodles, separate them with a plastic spoon and let in the water with the lid on for 3-4 minutes. Rinse them and pour them in the wok. Add soy sauce and the omelette cut in thin strips and keep stirring until all flavours are blend.

it's written for FreeBSD but it has some good info for any *BSD version. My favorite part is this:

Stopping Login Attacks

Using the customary port numbers or alternate port numbers for SSH, FTP, or
Telnet all failed logins are logged to /var/log/auth.log file. In most cases the
sending IP address is the real IP address of the attacker. In the long term the
solution is to do whois on the attackers IP address and report him to the ISP
who owns the IP address.

In the short term to stop the login attack in progress many people will add a
"deny this IP address" rule to their firewall rule set file. Yes this will stop
the attack immediately, but when a firewall keeps all these special "deny this
IP address" rules the firewall becomes very hard to maintain as that list of
denied IP address rules grows longer. A far better solution is to separate the
denied IP address list from the firewall rule set. This can be done using the
"routed blackhole" command.

Example:

To Add use
route add -host attacker_ip 127.0.0.1
-blackhole

To Delete use
route delete -host attacker_ip 127.0.0.1 -blackhole

To List use
netstat -nrgrep 127

This is executed in the IP stack and is faster than in the firewall when you
have over 20 of those special "deny this IP address" rules in the firewall. The
"attacker_ip" in found in the log records in
/var/log/auth.log file.

Connection errors can crop up out of nowhere ; the error message tend to be vague, and not useful at all. Here's a plan of attack which will solve many connection issues. Try each step, and proceed if the problem persists.

1) Check your environment ; verify the variables depicted below are set.
( NT: check the registry )

Here's a great tutorial on working with Oracle and images in the database.

Saving Images in Oracle:

Many applications require that images be saved to the database. One common example is an HR database, which stores photographs along with other employee details. There seems to be a fair amount of discussion as to the best way to do this ColdFusion. Some folks claim that one has to resort Java, others say that PL/SQL (using Oracle's built in DBMS_LOB package) is the way to go. Below I describe a technique that requires only CFML.

The code I describe here saves an image to Oracle, and then retrieves and saves it to another location on the CF server filesystem.

To get started, create a test table to store the image:

Here I'm going to assume that the primary key "id" is auto-generated by an Oracle sequence and a trigger (details on how to do this are available here). The column that will hold our image is of type CLOB - Character Large OBject. At this point, the astute reader is going to ask, "but isn't the image in binary format?" Yes indeed it is, but the problem is that ColdFusion's internal type conversion mechanism makes it difficult to pass a binary object directly to the database. To get around this we'll convert the image to a character string before saving it, and reconvert it to binary on retrieval.

Now that our table is created, let's move on to the CFML. As you'll see it's pretty straightforward. First we read the image using CFFILE:

Next we save the image to the database. Note the use of CFQUERYPARAM and the conversion to character type using the CF function toBase64():

How many years did you register your domain name for?

If it's only one then that's a point against you in Googles eyes.

Why?

Because the majority of Spam websites only register a domain name for one year. A domain registered for a longer period implies that the owner is more likely to be legitimate and serious about their web site.

This is just one of the unusual factors now considered by Google when indexing and ranking a website. Factors you could never even have guessed at in some cases.

How do I know this?

Google have recently filed United States Patent Application 20050071741 on March 31, 2005.

In which many of the search giants secret ranking criteria is revealed and it makes very interesting reading. You have got to read this if you're serious about ranking well in Google. The days of Spaming Google are drawing to a close. With this patent they reveal just how hard they're coming down on Spam sites. You Do Not want to get caught out.

Below you will find the hard facts, I recommend you bookmark this page now. You will need to reference it each time you optimize a new site.

• First of all Links. It's common knowledge that Google relies heavily on inbound relevant links to rank a site. Now they explain exactly how it works. :)

This is a major factor so I'll take a few paragraphs to explain what is going on.

As well as the number, quality and anchor text factors of a link. Google seems to also consider historical factors. Googles 'sandbox' or aging delay begins countdown the minute links to a new site are discovered.

Google record the discovery of a link and link changes over time. The speed at which a site gains links and the link life span.

With this in mind fast link acquisition may be a strong indicator of potential search engine Spam.

Gone are the days of pages and pages full of link farms. You must grow your links slowly to stay below the radar and be careful who you exchange links with. That means no more buying hundreds of links at once or other underhand tactics.

PR is now very valuable.

Your link anchor text should vary but remain consistent with your site content. No more using your main keywords on every link exchange you gain. That's 'anchor Spam'. Instead vary them around your top five to ten keywords.

Link exchanges are still very important but you must work and utilize them ethically. If you don't and you get caught the recovery from a ban can be months in coming and your host and IP may also be recorded.

Softly softly seems to be the message. The fact is fewer but better quality links will benefit you more anyway and likely to be more long-term which is good to.

• Site click through rates (CTR) may now be monitored through cache, temporary files, bookmarks and favorites. Via the Google toolbar or desktop tools. Many have suspected for some time that sites are reward for good CTR with a raise in ranking. Similar to how Adwords works.

CTR is monitored to see if fresh or stale content is preferred for a search result.

CTR is monitored for increases or decreases relating to trends or seasons.

• Web page rankings are recorded and monitored for changes.

• The traffic to a web page is recorded and monitored over time.

• Sites can be ranked seasonally. A ski site may rank higher in the winter than in the summer. Google can monitor and rank pages by recording CTR changes by season.

• Bookmarks and favorites could be monitored for changes, deletions or additions.

• User behavior in general could be monitored.

As Google is capable of tracking traffic to your site you should closely monitor the small amount of copy returned in search results. Ideally you want to integrate a call to action in there to increase CTR.

Clicks away from your site back to the search results are also monitored. Make your site as sticky as possible to keep visitors there longer. As mentioned above it may also help if you could get your visitors to bookmark you.

• The frequency and amount of page updates is monitored and recorded as is the number of pages.

Mass updates of hundreds of files will see you pop up on the radar.

On the other hand to few or to small updates to your site could see your rankings slide. Unless your CTR is good. A stale page that receives good traffic may hold it's own and not require an update. So don't update for the sake of it.

Depending on your market fresh content may not be a requirement. If the information your pages contain does not go out of date then updating may not be necessary. If your market is more news based for example then changes regularly are a must. In general changes don't necessarily have to mean fresh content. They could involve simple edits to current content.

A further indicator that Google is really cracking down on Spam is made clear in the following extract from the Patent. Mention is made of changing the focus of multiple pages at once.

Here's the quote -
"A significant change over time in the set of topics associated with a document may indicate that the document has changed owners and previous document indicators, such as score, anchor text, etc., are no longer reliable.

Similarly, a spike in the number of topics could indicate Spam. For example, if a particular document is associated with a set of one or more topics over what may be considered a ’stable’ period of time and then a (sudden) spike occurs in the number of topics associated with the document, this may be an indication that the document has been taken over as a ‘doorway’ document.

Another indication may include the sudden disappearance of the original topics associated with the document. If one or more of these situations are detected, then [Google] may reduce the relative score of such documents and/or the links, anchor text, or other data associated the document."

There's still more to look out for:-

• Changes in on page keyword density is monitored and recorded as are changes to anchor text.

• The domain name owner address is considered, most likely to help in a local search result.

• The technical and admin contact details are checked for consistency. These are often falsified for Spam domains.

• Your hosts IP address. If you are on a shared server it's possible somebody else on that server is using dirty tactics or Spaming. If so your site will suffer since you share the same IP.

The impression I get here is that Google have learned from the Spam attack they suffered in early 2004 and are determined to eradicate it.

So what do you do?

There's a lot to take onboard here and consider. But you can't go far wrong with your SEO if you try to grow your site as organically as possible. If you know what you're doing you can take short cuts. Carry on with link exchanges but consider each site carefully and slow down in your gathering of them. Vary your anchor text. Add small amounts of good quality content to your site regularly. Check your search engine listings and edit your site to include a call to action in them if possible. Make your site more 'sticky' to encourage visitors to stay a while. Encourage visitors to Bookmark your site. Oh and register new domain names for at least two years.

Before you do anything remember to reference the above info first. It may just save you months of misery as your site gets banned and 'Sand boxed'.

Overall keep it ethical and you can't go wrong.
Do not be tempted to Spam. Stick to the guidelines above and you are much more likely to outlast and out rank your competition.

Here's a way to create a table in Oracle with a field set to auto increment. It's pretty simple but make sure you see the / after the end statement of the create trigger statement

Effing good tasting, spicy food, but A) you get a tiny portion, and B) it costs a fortune (which is funny because it looks like a hole-in the wall in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw area)! Expect to pay $13 for a meal (for one!) and then have to drive 10 minutes to get it to the closest park to eat."

Truer words have never been said. Phillips BBQ is the best BBQ around, but they are in a bad location. I wish they had a delivery service.
